Westminster Abbey just after the Royal Wedding but before the Queen's Diamond Jubilee  (Shot May 2011)

Another view of the Abbey in May 2011 still with the patina of age on the stonework before it was completely cleaned off for the Jubilee. I liked it better before.  To the left of the picture is St Margaret's and through the trees, in the distance, the clock tower called Big Ben; a misnomer for that's the bell that strikes the hour.

The Burghers gave themselves up to the British during the Siege of Calais in order to save the town. Their lives were spared by the insistence of the British commander's wife in order to bring good luck to their unborn child.  Rodin's statue recalling the event is in Victoria Tower Gardens close to the Houses of Parliament.

Still in Victoria Tower Garden the memorial to the abolition of the slave trade. The long wall behind the memorial is part of the Mill Bank embankment to the Thames.

The Cenotaph, a memorial to those in the armed forces who have died in battle.  Originally it was for those who fell in the Great War (1914-1918) and for that reason the time and date it is officially remembered on the anniversary of its armistice; the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, 11 o'clock on the 11th of November 1918.
